Year 2
Primary Two is an exciting year for all pupils. During the year we aim to develop each child’s confidence and skills in all areas of the curriculum. We will build upon the foundations which have been put in place during P1 and provide opportunities for each pupil to explore and learn in a meaningful and enjoyable way.
Pupils will enjoy active learning through topic based lessons and planned play activities. Learning is fun and pupils will develop knowledge in all areas of our curriculum as they explore each topic. Much of our literacy and numeracy will be linked to our topics so that connections can be made by the pupils and skills are developed in a meaningful way.
Pupils will be encouraged to take a role in planning their own learning through the use of topic planning boards in the classroom. The first topic explored in P2 is water. Within this topic pupils will gain an understanding of the water cycle, water in our homes, water and living things, transport on water and much more. They will also enjoy a visit to the paddling pool to experience the fun that we can have in water.
The next topic we will visit is Castles where pupils will enjoy active role play opportunities in our very own castle. They will be encouraged to develop vocabulary linked to castles, explore a range of texts with castle themes and take on the roles of characters within these. Opportunities for imaginative and creative writing will be a focus during this topic.
In our third topic the pupils will explore Our Senses. This is a fascinating topic for children as they become aware of how amazing their bodies really are. We will explore each of the five senses in turn allowing the children to participate in many practical investigations and activities along the way. They will also have opportunities to develop role play in our very own hospital and extend their understanding with a visit from a doctor or nurse.
As Spring begins the pupils will develop their knowledge of living things through our topic Minibeasts. This again is a fun and fascinating topic which the pupils really enjoy. Minibeast hunts, visiting tarantulas and an Ugly Bug Ball amongst many other exciting activities all inspire the children to develop their skills across the curriculum in a meaningful way.
Linguistic Phonics will also play a big part in each pupil’s development in P.2. They will be taken through the various stages of spelling enabling them to become independent in their reading and writing.
Pupils can look forward to performing during topic related assemblies, school concerts and religious celebrations. It is hoped that all pupils will experience an enjoyable and stimulating year in Primary 2!
