Year 1
Welcome to primary one at St Finian’s, we are all so excited to have you here. We hope you’re ready for a busy and exciting year as we begin to build the foundations for our learning. In September we will spend time adjusting to school life, getting to know each other and our classroom routines.
We will start the year off with our ‘All About Me’ Topic, sharing information about what makes us special.
By October, our school day will be longer as we begin to stay until 2:00pm. We are very lucky to have our primary seven buddies who help us settle into school life.
In primary one we focus on learning through play as we develop key skills through play based activities. Our role play area helps us to develop language and communication skills; small world helps us to develop our imagination; sand and water trays help us to explore mathematical language while craft activities help us to develop fine motor skills. We also use our interactive whiteboard and iPads during play to progress our ICT skills.
We love to play outside where we have climbing frames, bikes, trikes and scooters to develop gross motor skills. Being outside allows us to reflect on the changes around us as we enter the different seasons, and think about how we can care for our environment.
Numeracy and literacy will be linked to our topics so that we can add depth and breadth to our learning. This year we will explore the Farm, Toys, People Who Help Us, Food and Transport. We will visit the farm, interview people who help us about their jobs and Nanny Austen will come to show us her toys from the past.
When we begin our Toys topic, The Everywhere Bear will come out to meet all of his new P1 friends. At the end of each week, one lucky P1 will get to take him home for a weekend of adventures. Pupils can record what they get up to with The Everywhere Bear in his special book, before recounting their weekend news to the rest of the class.
We hope you have an enjoyable and memorable year in St. Finian’s!
